FAKT

The Foster, Adoption, and Kinship Care Training (FAKT) program is designed to assist families interested in foster care, adoption, kinship or relative care with their training needs. Training is provided for residents in the western part of Marion County as well as Boone, Hendricks, Montgomery, Morgan, Putnam, Madison, Hamilton, Hancock and Tipton Counties.
Trainings are offered on a monthly basis at several convenient Indiana locations. There are various evening and weekend classes from which to choose.
This twenty hour FAKT Pre-Service training is required for foster, kinship, and relative care providers while an additional six hours are required for adoptive families. Continuing education hours and Infant/Child/Adult CPR, First Aid and Universal Precautions classes are also available.
Foster Care Process:
  • Once you have contacted your County of residence and completed their intake process, call our intake line at 317-545-5281 x239 to reserve a place in one of our upcoming trainings.

  • At the training, you will be given an Authorization for Release form that will need to be signed and returned to the trainers. This form gives our office authorization to release your training information to the County that will be licensing you once you have completed the required 20 hours of training.

  • First Aid, Infant/Child/Adult CPR, and Universal Precautions are also required before licensure. Please see below for additional First Aid, CPR, and Universal Precautions resources.

  • Various Criminal History Background checks are also required for all prospective foster, kinship, and relative care providers and their household members prior to licensure.

  • You will receive a Licensing Application Packet from your referring County or during FAKT Pre-Service Training. This packet is to be completed and given to your Licensing Worker when they visit your home to complete the home study.

  • The Family Preparation Summary (Home Study) will be completed once you have met all training requirements.

  • The Family Preparation Summary (Home Study) includes at least two home visits by an assigned Licensing Worker. The worker will complete a walk through of your home as well as go over the Licensing Application Packet that you have completed. A few of the things the worker will look for are smoke detectors, fire extinguishers on each level of your home and adequate space for the child(ren) that may be place in your home. Each child must have his/her own bed. Boy and Girls are not allowed to share a bedroom. There must also be adequate space available for the child(ren) to store his/her belongings. The worker will also look at your financial stability to ensure that placing a child(ren) in your home will not create a financial hardship for your family.

  • Prior to the approval of the Family Preparation Summary (Home Study), you will have an opportunity to review the study and discuss the written information with your worker.

  • For information on the adoption process, please see our Adoption page.
